The Motoring Expert: What to do with a slow puncture
![]()
This week JOE's Motoring Expert Mark Connolly, from Premier Motor Group, gives his help to one JOE reader who's got a bit of a slow puncture.
Hi Mark,
I’ve noticed that one of my tires keeps deflating every couple of months, nothing too severe though. Should I still get it checked or is it ok to run on? Also, what pressure is the best for an average sized car?
John Gilleece, Killarney.
Hi John,
There is obviously something wrong with the tyre as it shouldn't ever deflate. It's likely that it’s just a slow puncture which you could get fixed for €10/€15, so you should get it looked at. You don’t want to be stuck somewhere and have to call the AA or for it to blow out while you are driving, which is not a nice experience.
The average tyre pressure would be around 32psi, but exact figures will be found in your owners manual and will depend on the type of car. Best to use whatever pressure the manufacture says though as 32psi is just the all-round average.
Keeping the correct pressure in the tyres will reduce your engines workload and reduce overall fuel consumption, co2 emissions and general tyre wear.
Thanks,
Mark.
