Fassbender and other Irish Oscar nominees are still being claimed as British

Ah heyor...

Today is a proud day for the Irish film industry after Michael Fassbender, Saoirse Ronan, Lenny Abrahamson, Emma Donoghue, Benjamin Cleary and Ed Guiney all received Oscar nods. While not from our shores, Irish film fans will also have a strong interest in Brie Larson's chances of winning a Best Actress award for her performance in 'Room' and if Emma Donoghue doesn't win Best Adapted Screenplay for that film then here's hoping that Nick Hornby does for 'Brooklyn'. Nothing should detract from this incredible achievement but once again the usual process of British media outlets claiming Irish people as their own has veered its head. To begin with, The Metro originally included Michael Fassbender and Saoirse Ronan on their list of British people that were nominated for an Oscar but they quickly edited the article after a Twitter backlash.   It didn't end here though because the BBC also claimed Dublin born playwright, novelist and 'Room' screenwriter as Emma Donoghue as British. https://twitter.com/gavinoconnor/status/687633234507739136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw Surely three media outlets couldn't get their geography and history so woefully wrong?
