Get involved in the JOE Mass Debate: Can men and women just be friends?

Ah, the age-old dilemma...

JOE

Ah, the age-old dilemma…

Can men and women be good friends without wanting to make sweet, sweet love to each other? The question famously, ahem, reared its head in the excellent When Harry Met Sally back in 1989 and now it’s back in Daniel Radcliffe’s latest release, the immensely enjoyable What If AKA When Harry Potter Met Sally.

You can watch our interview with Daniel/Dan the Man/Radders by clicking here, where we got his own thoughts on this very important and controversial issue, an issue that you can contribute to down below.

What If, in Irish cinemas now, tells the story of Wallace (Radcliffe), a heartbroken young man who’s recently split up with his girlfriend. Things begin to look up, however, when he has a chance meeting with the lovely Chantry (Zoe Kazan) at his best friend’s party and, wouldn’t you know it, falls instantly in love with her. One problem though, she’s already got a boyfriend.

GODDAMMIT. Isn’t it always the way?

what if

Will Wallace and Chantry ever get together? Can men and women ever really just be ‘friends?’ Or will hot, steamy, sexy sex sex get in the way of their relationship like it often has a nasty habit of doing? All of these questions and more will be answered when you definitely go and see the film this weekend. Back to that quagmire of a question though…

Can men and women just be friends? – Patrick

What a ridiculous question. Of course men and women can just be friends. I honestly believe that whenever you meet that special someone in your life – whether it’s a beautiful, romantic, chance, moonlight meeting under the Spanish Arch in Galway, or whether it’s eating the face off of each other in Coppers at 3am after the All-Ireland final – they’ll be the right person for you, no matter who else comes along.

Don’t get me wrong though; obviously I can tell why other people might find my friends attractive, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I want to immediately hop on the good foot and do the bad thing with every single one of them. Some of them maybe… but, trust me, definitely not all of them.

I’ll say this though, they obviously all want to have sex with me, right? Right? Hello? Anyone?

*crickets*

*tumbleweeds*

*a church bell chimes in the distance*

Can men and women just be friends? – Ciaran

What a ridiculous question. Of course men and women cannot just be friends. The simple fact of the matter is that, no matter how committed to someone, or how unbelievably head over hells in love he is with his other half, it all still boils down to the fact that he’s a red-blooded male with one thing on his mind; eating lots of chicken having sex.

Now, we’re not saying that infidelity is rife and that all men are cheating b*stards but, what we are saying is (hypothetically of course), given the opportunity, all men would jump at the chance to, for want of a better word, jump at their friends.

It’s a sexy science fact, proven by sexy science people in their sexy science lab.*

*I’m not actually sure if it is a sexy science fact, but I really do hope that that sexy science lab with those sexy science people does exist.

Enough of Patrick and Ciaran’s blabbering in though, what do you think dear readers? Can men and women just be friends? Have your say below…
