Star Wars Episode VII to be set 30 years after Return Of The Jedi and will star everyone’s favourite droid…

A long time ago (plus 30 years), in a galaxy far, far away...

A long time ago (plus 30 years), in a galaxy far, far away…

Finally, some Star Wars casting news that has actually been confirmed. Amid swirling rumours (because that’s what rumours do, they swirl), R2-D2 – the delightful droid that everyone is looking for and the real hero of the Star Wars saga – has been confirmed to return to the big screen in the highly-anticipated Episode VII.

R2-D2

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney CEO Bob Iger, while speaking at an annual shareholder meeting, announced that “there will be some very familiar faces along with a trio of new young leads… Rumor has it that almost every actor in the world has been cast in this movie, but so far, the official cast member that we’ve confirmed — the only one —  is R2D2.”

Episode VII, which will be directed by J.J. Abrams, is set for release on December 18, 2015 and, even though shooting begins at London’s Pinewood Studios in May 2014, there have still been no other confirmed casting announcements.

The additional news that this latest installment will be set 30 years after the events of Return Of The Jedi means that the reappearance of “familiar faces” Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher could be all the more likely while, in the meantime, JOE will just wait by the phone for the inevitable congratulatory lead-man phone call from Mr Abrams.

Aaaaaaaaaany day now…

While we not-so-patiently wait for that particular call and you patiently wait for more more Star Wars news, here’s a little something to whet your appetite…
