The Great Gleesons – JOE profiles the fantastic film family

Your entire family feels inadequate compared to these guys now, right?

JOE

Your entire family feels inadequate compared to these guys now, right?

To celebrate today’s release of the critically-acclaimed Irish film Calvary, JOE recently caught up with the star and director of the film, none other than the living legend that is Brendan Gleeson and the wickedly talented John Michael McDonagh.

The pair, having worked together previously on the phenomenally funny The Guard (2011), have teamed up once more as Gleeson (now almost officially known as ‘Domhnall Gleeson’s da’) plays Father James, a good priest tormented by his small-town community, with one particular anonymous parishioner threatening to kill our holy hero in exactly one week’s time.

It’s less of a ‘whodunit’ and more of a ‘who’s-going-to-do-it’ as Gleeson prepares to meet his maker in this powerful and blackly comic Irish drama.

To mark the incredible impact that Gleeson Senior and his super-talented sons, Bríain and Dohmnall, have had on the film industry both here in Ireland and further afield, JOE has decided to pick three of our favourite moments from each of the three magnificent movie men…

Brendan Gleeson:

Brendan, the fantastically furry daddy of the family, is a living legend of the Irish film industry. The dramatic Dub is now a truly global star who started his working life as a teacher but, thankfully for all of us film fans, found his way to acting.

Here are some of our favourite clips…

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

In Bruges (2008)

The Guard (2011)

Bríain Gleeson:

Bríain, son of Brendan, a truly magnificent actor who is following in his father’s footsteps in fine style. Here he is in action…

Love/Hate (2010)

Immaturity for Charity (2012)

The Stag (2014)

Domhnall Gleeson:

Domhnall is the youngest member of the talented trio, a genuinely wonderful actor who is able to expertly execute both drama and comedy with equal awesome ability…

True Grit (2010)

Your Bad Self (2010)

About Time (2013)

Mary Gleeson:

Last but certainly not least, mother Mary. She may not be quite as well known as the rest her talented clan, but here she is starring alongside hubby and son in JOE’s SUPER BONUS CLIP… in so far as it’s super funny and super awkward:

Immaturity for Charity (2012)

Calvary is in Irish cinemas from Friday 11 April.
