If the early reviews are anything to go by, Skyfall is set to be one of the best ever episodes of the James Bond series. Time to get excited 007 fans.

Featuring Daniel Craig stepping into Bond’s shoes for the third time, Skyfall hits Irish screens on Friday week, October 26, and already there is a big buzz building about the 23rd episode in the long-running series.

According to film website DarkHorizons.com, advance screenings attended by selected members of the British and US press were held on Friday night and Bond fans will be glad to know that the early reviews are excellent, with the majority of critics effusive in their praise of Sam Mendes’ work.

Peter DeBruge of Variety Magazine, for example, said: “Putting the ‘intelligence’ in MI6, Skyfall represents a smart, savvy and incredibly satisfying addition to the 007 oeuvre.”

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter added: “Dramatically gripping while still brandishing a droll undercurrent of humor, this beautifully made film will certainly be embraced as one of the best Bonds by loyal fans worldwide,” while Kate Muir of The Times called it “a great British bulldog of a movie”.

The performances of Craig and of the likes of Javier Bardem and Judi Dench attracted praise, while the general consensus seems to be that Mendes did a pretty good job in the director’s chair.

The proof will indeed be in the pudding, but first impressions are that we’re looking at a film that will be on a par with Casino Royale if not better and that can only be good news.

If the sparkling reviews aren’t enough to get you excited, another look at the trailer in the video above should do the job.
