Poll: Do you think a united Ireland would be good for the country?

30/01/2012 5:13 pm

It’s something that would have been unheard of a few years back, but if Martin McGuinness has his way, we could have a united Ireland in the not too distant future. And we're trying to find out what the men of the country think.

The deputy first minister outlined his wish to have a referendum on the possible reunification of the country as early as 2016, a development which follows on quickly from the momentous appearance of Peter Robinson at the McKenna Cup Final on Saturday night - his first ever GAA match.

It was seen as a significant step in the improvement of community and cultural relations north of the border and McGuinness feels that a referendum on bringing the six counties within the nation of Ireland once again is just a matter of “sensible timing”.

Given the tempestuous history of Northern Ireland and the strong feelings that still exist on both sides of the political divide, it is bound to be a contentious issue.

But what do you think? Would it be good for Ireland as a whole? Or is a national reunion on the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising just too much, too soon?

The issue of whether or not it is good for the country is secondary. The main point is that it is right for the country.

I'm from the North. We wont come and steal your jobs ya know. Most of us have jobs of our own! And also it will save on these cross border bodies and reduce duplication of services. Most importantly, I don't want to be ruled by British people.

Disappointing results in the poll so far, although I don't know how many have voted.

The vote shouldn't be held just in the North, just in the South, or in both seperately. It should be a single national vote with all the Irish people getting the chance to have their collective say on the future of the island. There should be no outside interference from the British government, be it in the form of the imaginary line they drew across the country or otherwise (as was the case with the Good Friday Agreement).

As if anyone gives a rat's arse what Liverpool supporters think. Concentrate on getting 20 league titles before United do, which will be akin to pissing into the wind for you. It is the right thing to do because we are Irish, and need to be as one in one nation.
