Beyoncé and a horse fly: separated at birth?

13/01/2012 3:30 pm

Beyoncé has been everywhere this week, hasn’t she? Between giving birth and buying solid gold rocking horses for her week-old daughter, she’s constantly been in the news. But the latest Beyoncé-associated headline is a little bit different.

Researchers in Australia have renamed a rare breed of horse fly after the singer. We bet she’ll be thrilled when she finds out about this.

The fly, now known as the Scaptia (Plinthina) Beyonceae horse fly, was first collected in 1981 which is also the same year that Beyoncé was born. Another similarity that the two have in common is a love of bling – Beyoncé likes jewellery and the fly has a golden arse. Sure they’re practically twins like:

Don't you SEE the resemblance?!

The Telegraph reports that the name complies with the rules set out by the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, otherwise known as the place that gives animals celebrity names. Other celebrities that have had the honour of having an animal named after them include a Sting, who got a frog and Frank Zappa, who got a spider.

“It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyoncé as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy – the naming of species,” said Bryan Lessard, from Australia’s science agency CSIRO.

He added that the horse fly’s behind made it the “all-time diva of flies.” We have diva flies now? What next?

The CSIRO has contacted Beyoncé for a response but is yet to hear anything back. Telling one of the most famous women in the world that you’re naming a fly after her because of some striking similarities, eh…we wouldn’t be holding our breath if we were you…
