Earlier today we gave you news of an earthquake that hit Mayo. Now we have more info - apparently there was the possibility of a tsunami.
The quake, which struck just before 9am, measured 4.0 on the Richter scale, which is considered “light” on the international scale, but still capable of causing structural damage.
The epicentre of the quake was offshore near Belmullet:

It also caused “a huge volume” of the citizens of Mayo to flood the switchboards of Ballyhaunis-based Midwest Radio this morning. We contacted Midwest and their man who fielded the calls, Station Manager and presenter of their award-winning 9-11am current affairs show, Tommy Marren.
“Usually we’d screen each of the calls coming through, but we were getting such a large amount of them that we just put them all through between 9 and 9.45am.
"Loads of people reported feeling huge tremors, seeing cracks and minor structural damage to buildings and dogs and animals out in the fields being quite nervous.”
The calls came from a large area ranging from Achill, to Ballinrobe to Ballina and Tommy also says that some concerned callers inquired about the possibility of tsunamis hitting the shoreline.
The Irish Geological Survey notified Midwest at 10.45am to let the shocked folk at the station know that any possibility of a tsunami had passed.
The earthquake is one of the largest in recent years, but is still some way off the record of the biblical quake that hit Dublin in 1984, registering 5.5 on the scale.
Here are a selection of the shocked calls that came through on Midwest this morning:
