Imagine going to the effort of staging an ATM raid only to find out that the cash cassettes that you had stolen were completely empty. You’d be absolutely raging, right? Well that’s exactly what happened to some bungling robbers in Dublin yesterday. Are they Ireland's dumbest criminals?
The Irish Independent reports that the idiotic armed raiders were forced to leave the scene of their crime empty-handed after they grabbed the wrong cash cassettes from security guards about to fill an ATM. Grabbing empty cash cassettes? Smart move. Although we don't think they're worth much these days...
The two robbers had armed themselves with a handgun and were waiting for the arrival of security staff to fill up the hole in the wall. The ATM was outside the bank on the corner of Dublin’s High Street and Bridge Street, located in the south inner city.
Trying to be clever, one of the burglars posed as an ATM customer and then pounced as soon as the security staff arrived. But in a great display of stupidity, they grabbed the empty cash cassettes that had just been removed from the ATM machine, rather than the full ones that were right beside them.
When they realised their mistake, the raiders quickly grabbed a cassette that did have cash in it. But when one robber attempted to open it a security device leaked dye all over the money, making it completely unusable. Surely they should've know that would happen? Obviously not...
According to reports, the raiders, clearly fed up with all the effort, eventually escaped on foot.
Given the amount of stories about stupid Irish criminals these days we’re starting to think that someone should start holding an awards ceremony. We’ve heard worse, but in terms of robberies, trying to steal an empty cash cassette is pretty dim…
