Former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds has passed away, Aged 81

The Roscommon-born politician passed away in the early hours of this morning.

 The Roscommon born politician passed away in the early hours of this morning.

Albert Reynolds’ family have issued a statement saying that that he passed away shortly before 3am this morning following a long battle with illness. He is survived by his wife Kathleen and five children; two sons and five daughters.

Reynolds’ era as Taoiseach was marked by the X Case and the Beef Tribunal however his finest achievement was the significant contribution he had in bringing about the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Reynolds was first elected to the Dáil in 1977, and went on to lead the country as Taoiseach in two separate terms. The Roscommon born politican succeeded Charlie Haughey as Taoiseach in 1992 as part of Fianna Fáil’s coalition with the Progressive Democrats.

His second reign was in ’94 as part of a coalition with Labour.
