If you’re heading to Euro 2012 this year, you might want to bring a lot more cash with you. Why? Well, if you want a place to sleep, you’re going to have to fork out up to €2,000 a night for it.
Yes, the Irish Sun reports today that Gdansk hotels are hiking up their rates to drastic heights in order to take advantage of the extra tourism this summer. One hotel in particular has switched its rates from a reasonable enough €100 a night to a massive €2,000. Crazy, right?
A sixteen night stay at the hotel in question would cost football supporters an eye-watering €29,907. Ouch. You could buy a brand new car for that amount of money and honestly? You’d probably sleep better in said car.
The Hotel Parnas located in the Old Town of Gdansk boasts air-conditioned rooms, cable TV and free internet access, but would you be willing to fork out €2,000 a night for it? Yeah, thought so.
These latest price hikes from Gdansk come after officials from the Polish city spoke out and said that they were negotiating with hotels for cheaper rooms during the football tournament. Speaking in Dublin last week, Maciej Labuda, from the city hall of Gdansk, assured fans that they would not be “ripped off” this summer.
However he also admitted that in recent months the prices had gone up “multiple times on several occasions.”
It is estimated that up to 20,000 Irish supporters will head to Poland to cheer on Ireland when they tackle Croatia and Spain on Polish soil this June. While the team will be staying at a five-star hotel in Gdynia, fans will have to fight for bargains when it comes to their own accommodation.
And let’s just say that reviews for the €2,000 a night Hotel Parnas have been less than flattering.
“For this money most services should be better,” wrote one guest on the accommodation website bookings.com.
Are you planning on heading to Poland this summer? Do you have your accommodation sorted?
