Horse meat found in supermarket burgers

If you normally just grab a packet of the pre-made burgers at the supermarket, maybe have a quick read of the ingredients before you buy.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has launched an investigation after traces of horse DNA were found in pre-made burgers which have been sold widely across a number of supermarkets.

A bit of a 'mare for all concerned then if you bought any recently, hopefully you didn't get the trots after eating them. Tesco seem to have been the worst affected, with reports showing that up to 29 per cent of an Everyday Value Beef Burger contained traces of horse meat.

While there is no health risk to having horse meat, the concern is as to why there was traces of the DNA found in the meat.

They have also found traces of pig meat in nearly 85 per cent of the burgers sampled, and while this makes a bit more sense given that both meats would be processed at the same plant, it's still a concern for authorities, who are puzzled as to why there are any traces of horse meat knocking around at two processing plants based in Ireland.

We love a good burger here at JOE too, but we don't particularly care for this type of horsing around. We'll just say neigh next time we're offered one we think.
