State papers have revealed that top legal advice was sought in the early 1980’s as publicans in Clare were thought to be showing pornographic films.
In 1982 a Superintendent felt that it was such a prevalent issue that he wrote to the State solicitor in Co. Clare concerned that there was no law in the land to curb the showing of explicit movies.
He said that there was intelligence of at least one bar in the Ennistymon area offering blue movies, but no bars or publicans are named in the document.
Despite the suspicions raised and the involvement of the DPP, no convictions were ever made due to a lack of evidence.
The documents were contained in a file from the Attorney General’s office.
