Would Jedward be better than Enda at fighting for Ireland’s interests? Gerry Adams thinks so

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams reckons Eurovision twins Jedward would be a better bet than Taoiseach Enda Kenny at representing Ireland at high-powered EU meetings.

Eurovision fever – as opposed to, say, European Union cholera – seems to have swept the Dáil this week, with Adams referencing the Lucan twins during supposedly important discussions over Ireland’s position in Europe ahead of the so-called Austerity Treaty referendum next week.

“Could I ask you to step aside from the EU summit because you’re clearly out of your depth?” he told Enda. “Why don’t you send Jedward to represent us? They at least might stand up for Ireland’s interests.”

With a gift for comic timing notably absent from Gerry Adams’s armoury we’re not fully sure whether he was cracking a funny.

But Enda certainly thought so, responding with a grin to wish Jedward all the best in Baku on Saturday night.

Who knows, between Jedward this weekend and Robbie Keane & Co in Poland (and hopefully Ukraine) in a couple of weeks’ time, pop culture and sport could go a long way towards getting us out of the mire in which we’ve found ourselves.

Although, if the dire warnings of Sinn Féin and the rest of the doom-merchants in the ‘No’ campaign are to come to pass, even a series of wide-margin wins in Baku, Poznan and Gdansk might not be enough to lift the gloom.

But hey, at least it's sunny...
