Michael Conlan lost last night to Robeisy Ramirez Carranza but has been touched today by an outpouring of support over his Facebook page.
In a thrilling three round Flyweight semi-final Conlan fought his superlative 18-year old Cuban opponent, losing 20-10 to miss out on a final but earn his bronze medal.
20-year old Conlan engaged with the lightening quick and powerful puncher toe-to-toe and the Cuban opened up his lead in the third round as Conlan lay everything on the line for the win.
The Belfast man took to Facebook last night announcing his intentions to stay on for the Olympics in Rio in four years time and to reject any offers to turn professional. He also to apologised for letting people down, prompting many hundreds of fans on the site to tell him there was no need as he had done everyone proud:

So touched was Conlan that in the wee hours of the morning “the baby” of the six strong Irish team put up another status to thank all his fans as they had bombarded his phone with messages all night:

With one gold, two bronzes and another silver or gold to come tonight from John Joe Nevin this is the most successful Irish boxing team at an Olympics ever, the boxers haven’t let anyone down.
