Brendan O’Connor didn’t come close to matching that tab though as ‘The Saturday Night Show’ accounted for €7,582 but the real interesting figures are in RTE’s travel expenses.

In 2014, the station spent €2,004,000 which represents a 10% increase on the previous year. Dublin taxi drivers must be happy to get the call from Montrose because the station clocked up €388,000 in taxi fares alone.

In a statement to the Irish Independent, an RTÉ spokesperson said “”During 2014 RTÉ personnel had to travel to cover key events of national importance including the World Cup, the state visit of the President to the UK and European soccer qualifiers.”

“Providing live coverage of these, and other events, necessitated additional travel, both at home and abroad, and this is reflected in the increased travel expenditure. In overall terms RTÉ has reduced its operating cost by almost €130M since 2008. During this period RTÉ has also been subject to extensive independent review; including a review by New Era which found RTÉ to be efficiently run.”
