Ireland's population has grown according to Census 2016

Ireland's population has grown by 3.7% in the last five years according to the preliminary results of Census 2016, which were released this morning. Figures published from the CSO reveal that Ireland's population has swelled to 4,757,976, that's an increase of 169, 724.

Among the fastest growing counties were the four administrative areas of Dublin, along with the commuter belt counties of Meath, Kildare and Laois and the cities of Cork and Galway.

While most counties experienced some level of population growth, three counties witnessed population decline over the five years, namely Donegal (-1.5%), Mayo (-0.2%) and Sligo (-0.1%).

The number of occupied households increased by just over 49,000, an increase of 3%. As the population increased by 3.7% over the five years, household formation has fallen behind population growth from 2011 to 2016.
