Motorist racks up six-figure bill after ignoring M50 toll over 1,000 times in 2014

Big money

We’re not talking about an extra fiver.

€155,000 and counting is the bill for one driver who ignored the M50 toll more than 1,018 times last year and he is not the only one racking up the numbers.

Hundreds of drivers are ignoring the M50 toll, which is leaving the state a massive €5 million out of profit for 2014.

This deficit is a 25 per cent increase on the year before, which cost the state €4 million in revenue.

The National Roads Authority (NRA) collected almost €100 million from 43 million journeys through the toll point on the M50.

A large amount of the unpaid tolls consist of internationally registered cars, with 95 per cent os those from the UK.

Over 100,000 vehicles use the toll bridge every day and the maximum amount a driver’s bill can rise to for a single unpaid journey is €152.60.

However, according to the NRA, there is no cap on what a driver can owe if he makes multiple passages without paying.

Legal proceedings can be taken to recoup their losses and in some cases personal property may be repossessed to cover the costs.
