Sheer class

Conor Heneghan

What a class act.

The people of Ireland are still in shock following Bill O’Herlihy’s untimely passing yesterday as we attempt to come to terms with the loss of a universally popular broadcaster who is firmly deserving of the title ‘national treasure’.

Many tales of Bill’s warmth, kindness, generosity and of his qualities of a broadcaster have been told since news of his death reverberated around the country yesterday and another one surfaced last night to serve as a reminder of the gentleman that he was.

Cliona Foley, a renowned sportswriter who recently left her post in the Irish Independent, shared a letter on Twitter last night that Bill wrote to her following the 1990 World Cup, during which Cliona had wrote daily reports on RTE’s memorable coverage.

It pretty much sums up the man he was.

You’ll be sorely missed Billo.
