A new US$300m transatlantic cable was attached to Ross Strand, Mayo this evening…
The cable will provide a super fast internet connection and is expected to be a major economic boost for the West of Ireland.
The fibre optic cable is owned and operated by Irish company Aqua Comms and runs from Mayo to Long Island, New York.
Amazingly the cable will enable 53.8 millisecond transfer speeds from Ireland to the USA when it becomes operational in 2016.
The cable is also capable of handling one-third of the world’s calls as well as the entire internet traffic of Europe and the US.
Speaking to Silicon Republic, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said, “The development of new digital infrastructure is essential to help create new jobs and new business opportunities across Ireland.
“This transatlantic cable is a remarkable project which has extensive positive implications for Mayo and the west, potentially opening up the entire region for new investment.”
The new infrastructure is expected to create many jobs for the west as well as business opportunities for companies.
