Incredibly lucky woman still alive after falling off a cliff while texting
We’ve heard of people bumping into a telegraph pole or another person while in the process of sending a text, but falling off a cliff?
Sending a text message requires such complete concentration that everything else around us seems irrelevant, but most of us would be careful enough not to be so distracted that we would fall off a cliff.
That’s what happened to poor Maria Pestrikoff in Kodiak, Alaska, recently, after she plunged 60 feet off a cliff near her home while texting and trying to discard a cigarette butt at the same time.
According to Associated Press, Pestrikoff slipped on wet grass and fell with her phone in one hand and a cigarette in another, but remarkably survived the drop and was eventually rescued by the local fire department.
“She was in the rocks between the boulders and she was calling for help. She was screaming in agony,” said Pestrikoff’s friend Anthony Burke, who called the emergency services after hearing Pestrikoff screaming from the rocks below.
Not only was Pestrikoff lucky to survive the fall, but she was also nearly washed up by the incoming tide before being rescued in a fairly complicated procedure carried out by a number of skilled rescuers who were able to stabilise her and secure her in a stretcher before she was lifted back to the top of the cliff.
We know it’s an extreme case, but if ever there was an example of the need to be careful while sending a text, then this is certainly it.
