Now some of you will say we have some asses in our political system as it is, but as far as we’re aware an actual live donkey has never ran in an election here before. It nearly happened in Ecuador though.
Presidential elections take place in Ecuador in 2013, but the campaigning is well under way at the moment as the potential candidates try to convince voters that they are the right person for the job.
‘Person’ might not have been the appropriate word had a group of young people in the city of Guayaquil had their way as at least 40 people paraded a donkey known as Senor Burro through the city (they even put a tie on him for God’s sake) and brought him to the electoral offices in a lame attempt to register him as a candidate.
Thankfully, sanity soon prevailed and, despite the campaigners having prepared a mock voter registration card with a hilarious photo of Senor Burro superimposed on a man wearing a suit, 'Mr Donkey' was refused entry, with one of the guards saying that it “would be disrespectful to the National Electoral Council."
Before you begin to wonder what sort of crazy folk are living in Ecuador, it should be noted that the campaigning on behalf of Senor Burro was merely a stunt to remind the Ecuadorian people of how important is to vote for the right candidate and if it was publicity they were after, they certainly did a good job on that score.
Cynics will say that it wouldn’t matter whether or not Senor Burro was allowed to run for President, however, because they’ll end up electing a donkey anyway.
Check out the elaborate lengths Senor Burro’s supporters went to for yourself in the video above.
