Olympic Spillage #12: Olympic ukulele renditions, Alan Davies in trouble and that’s a pretty knee to the face

Today we're handing out medals for covers of crap pop songs, poor jokes and great knees to the face in today's Olympic Spillage.

The medal for best ukulele cover of a crap pop song goes to Australia...

At the Olympics we get reacquainted with a lot of athletes that we haven’t heard of since the last Olympics and regret that their prominence in the international media is limited to once every four years.

Such is the case with Australia’s 10meter Olympic diving champion from 2008, Matthew Mitcham.

He’s one of the more happy-go-lucky, charismatic and entertaining athletes at London this year and the 24-year old Australian also happens to be one of the few openly-gay athletes at the game.

Mitcham is fairly active on Twitter usually responding to random questions like what’s his blood-type? And what’s his favourite animal?

His bio lists him as from being from “somewhere over the rainbow” and describes him thusly, “Yes, I'm that gay, 2008-Olympic-gold-medal-winning diver dude. And yes, bro, I am quite sick. ((Diving Aug 10/11 in #London2012))”

So yes, we’re quite big fans of this guy now, he has only sullied his reputation slightly by posting a video of his ukulele rendition of Beyonce’s annoying “Put a ring on it” with the following description with the video: “I profess to be neither a great instrumentalist nor singer; I’m just an Olympic diver who likes to strum away in his spare time. I think this is where I am supposed to credit Beyonce or something…”

We reckon his ukulele version is better than the original, but the good news is he’s soliciting requests over Twitter for new songs he should cover and at JOE we’d like to hear a ukulele version of “Thunder” by ACDC from the soon-to-be legendary Olympic diver/ukulele popstar.

The medal for lamest Tweet goes to Alan Davies

Alan Davies comes across as a loveable scamp on QI and is quite often is cast as the dim-witted one on the panel.

The long-haired comedian lived up to that reputation with a Tweet yesterday that caught him quite considerable amount of flak from his Irish fans on Twitter:

Implying that the Irish are a bit dumb has already got legendary British Olympian Daley Thompson in trouble this summer and you’d think that Davies would have learnt to be careful.

The tweet has since been deleted but fortunately a few people managed to get a screenshot of it so we can bring it to you in all its Olympian un-funniness. (Yes, we made a word up there.)

Personally we don’t find the Tweet that offensive to Irish people at all, just desperately unfunny which is surely the greatest crime a comedian could commit.

The medal for best Mixed Martial Arts move used in a sport which is not Mixed Martial Arts goes to...

Here at JOE there are a few big MMA fans in the office and a fair few of us cheered as Anderson Silva’s epic knee to the gut took out the brash Chael Sonnen last month.

Even we winced at this one though, the United States Alex Morgan kneed Kiwi goalkeeper Jenny Bindon in the head:

The United States went on to win the encounter 2-0 to set up an Olympic Semi-Final against their north-of-the-border rivals Canada on Monday.

We hope Alex Morgan doesn’t consider a career in MMA after these Olympics, we’d hate to see her get a black-eye, just check out this picture from Sports Illustrated of the US women's soccer star:
