Not everyone in Britain is enjoying the Games, the continuing problems at NBC and what Usain Bolt had for breakfast.
Morrissey, not a big fan of the Olympics
Former Smith’s frontman Morrissey might be best described as prickly and a man with strong views on lots of issues, ranging from meat to nationalism.
And if his latest blog post is anything to go by, he is not exactly joining in the buoyant mood in Britain right now.
I am unable to watch the Olympics due to the blustering jingoism that drenches the event. Has England ever been quite so foul with patriotism? The "dazzling royals" have, quite naturally, hi-jacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs, and no oppositional voice is allowed in the free press. It is lethal to witness.
The singer goes on to compare the mood in Britain to Germany in 1939 before referring to the “grotesque inevitability of Lord and Lady Beckham” in 2013.
Safe to say he won’t be playing the Closing Ceremony then.
NBC’s latest problem
US broadcaster NBC is getting hammered for their Olympic coverage. Delayed transmissions and errors have led to #nbcfail trending pretty much all week and the fact they didn’t show the men’s 100m live yesterday means they may deserve the abuse they are getting.
But what they are showing is a little NSFW. The women’s water polo tournament is having a spate of exposed breasts. Water polo is a tough sport, with lots of pulling and dragging going on under the surface. Think Ulster football under water. Anyway, the pulling at swimsuits has led to the odd wardrobe malfunction and this has scandalised some of the more easily scandalised people of America. A quick Google will let you see what all the fuss is about. When even your water polo coverage is controversial, you know you are in trouble.
The breakfast, and lunch, of champions?
How does Usain Bolt do it? Yes he is pretty good shape and yes, he was born with some marvellous natural gifts but it’s really not fair that he can run faster than anyone else on the planet while eating like the rest of us.
Bolt famously had chicken nuggets from McDonald’s before his 2008 Olympic heroics so he was aksed last night if he had returned to his old reliable pre-race snack.
“I had some plaintains, some hash browns, fruit, then a wrap from McDonald’s. For lunch I had rice and pork and some apple juice,” he said in his post-race press conference. He also admitted to having a few of the famous nuggets too during his time in the Village.
Bolt did say that the wrap had some vegatables in it so it was healthy. At least it wasn'ta Big Mac I suppose.
