With the Olympics kicking off in London this weekend everyone is going to be getting into athletics very soon. The Morton Mile in Santry on Wednesday night produced a dramatic finish – and suitably dramatic pictures.
American athlete David Torrence was initially declared the winner by the narrowest of margins but his moustachioed compatriot Will Leer was later awarded the race by a margin of one-hundredth of a second.
The winning time was 3:56 and ten athletes crossed the line under the once-magical four-minute barrier – and with the front two hitting the deck shortly after the finishing line, the scene was set for some fine photos by Inpho’s Lorraine O’Sullivan.


Torrence (No 2, left) was initially declared the winner but Leer (No 6) was later given the win on photo finish evidence. Olympic Team Ireland hopeful Ciaran O'Lionaird (No 4) came home sixth.
