Try to keep calm Mayo fans but Dave Grohl has just clambered aboard the Mayo for Sam 2014 bandwagon

It’s times like these that you realise that the Mayo for Sam bandwagon isn’t going to die down until they win the bloody thing.

Some say it’s the long evenings and others will say it’s the smell of cut grass, but as far as we’re concerned, summer hasn’t truly arrived until a picture surfaces of a famous celebrity posing in a picture pledging their support for Mayo’s campaign to land a long-awaited All-Ireland title. Last night, they might have found their biggest supporter yet. Aideen Murray from Ballyhaunis, who has been working in Washington DC for the last six months, ran into none other than Dave Grohl in a bar she is working in last night after Dave and his Foo Fighters bandmates popped in for a drink having just come from the White House. Widely known as probably the nicest guy in music, the former Nirvana drummer was more than happy to publicly declare his support for the green and red in a picture that might just send Mayo fans over the edge. As your humble author knows only too well, we’re an excitable bunch in Mayo at the best of times, especially when it comes to the fortunes of the county football team.

  Aideen added that Dave was good enough to play and sing for an audience of just seven in the bar, and while that must have been a special experience, it was far from the most important thing he did on the night. I mean, come on, let's be honest here (we refer you again to the picture above).

  As a Mayo fan myself, all my life I’ve been waiting for my own county to land the All-Ireland title we’ve waited for such an everlong time and although we’re just a pretender to raging hot favourites Dublin this year, I’m convinced that we’re yet to see the best of you so far Mayo and this may well be the call that inspires James Horan’s boys to take that final step this year.
