It wasn’t a great weekend for Munster, and the news emerging from Thomond Park today is not going to cheer any unhappy Reds fans up.
While Ulster were tipped by some to do the business over Munster at the weekend, it was still a shock to see them travel to Limerick and beat the hosts in a must-win game at Thomond. For Munster fans it was an unpleasant shock to the system and while some took out their ire on ref Romain Poite, most accepted that the best team won and that the focus should switch to retaining their league title, starting with a big game against Glasgow this weekend.
The Scottish side are level with Munster on points and with Ulster snapping at their heels in the table, Glasgow will be going all out to jump into third. Sadly for Tony McGahan, Munster’s loss to Ulster also brought a couple of fresh injury headaches.
He may have only just welcomed back Conor Murray, Paul O’Connell, David Wallace and Donnacha Ryan but McGahan may now have to plan without Keith Earls and James Coughlan, at least in the short term.
Both players are set to get scans on injuries today. Earls has a lower leg injury while Coughlan broke a bone in his left hand in the Ulster game. The No 8 is expected to miss the Glasgow clash but the seriousness of Earls’ injury is not yet known.
With just three games left and with Munster in a real fight with Ospreys, Ulster, Glasgow and Scarlets for the three RaboDirect PRO 12 play-off places behind likely table-toppers Leinster, the last thing they need is a fresh round of injuries to some influential starters.
It never rains but it pours eh, Munster fans?
