Conor O'Shea's unusual new post

28/08/2012 6:54 pm

How are Team GB going to assess their poor performance in the swimming pool at London 2012? Ask a former Irish rugby star of course.

Team GB had a pretty awesome Olympics by any measurement, they put on a cracking Games and finished third in the medal table behind the superpowers of America and China. That’s a result.

They’re a little disappointed by their performances in the pool however, they only managed one silver and two bronzes by splashing about.

Their solution is to set up a body that will review the poor performance of British swimmers at the London Olympics.

Double Olympic open water medallist Thomas Lurz will be involved on the body amongst others, fair enough you think.

That’s when it gets weird, they also have asked for the expertise of the man in charge of the current Aviva Premiership champions Harlequins and  a former Ireland international in Conor O’Shea.

We have no doubt Conor is up for the challenge. If you can be the voice of reason on RTÉ’s rugby panel you are probably capable of anything.

He is also the former national director of the English Institute of Sport and probably a future manger of the Irish rugby team, all the same this comes off as a bit left of field to us.

Wouldn’t they have been better off with Paul O’Connell? Sure wasn’t he a great youth swimmer before he gave it up for the oval ball?
