Just a few weeks back it looked like Leinster were going to let Luke Fitzgerald walk away but news reaches us today that the Lion should be staying put.
We were as shocked as anyone when news emerged that Leinster were prepared to let Luke Fitzgerald leave the RDS as they could not agree a new contract with the utility back.
The 24-year-old had reportedly been offered €200,000 a year, down from his previous deal worth closer to €280,000 a year, and this pay cut was reported to be at the heart of the impasse over a new deal.
Thankfully, it seems that both sides have sat down and it looks like a deal is likely to be penned, according to Leinster Manager Guy Easterby.
Today’s Irish Independent carries quotes from Easterby that should be music to the ears of rugby fans.
"It was made clear last week that we wouldn't revisit it because of the week that was in it, but we'd certainly be keen to have something done before the (Heineken Cup) semi-final week and we'd hope to give you something before the start of that week," Easterby said.
"The IRFU have been working very hard to enable Luke to have the option of staying. And he has made it clear to us that he'd be keen to stay. We're still hopeful that a deal can be done.
"I know the IRFU are very keen for him to stay and therefore there is a process to go through that we all understand. They are working very hard. He's a 24-year-old kid and they want him here for the foreseeable future, as we all do."
If Fitzgerald wants to stay, and the IRFU want him to stay too, then it is hopefully just a case of all the little details, and money, being ironed out. The good news just keeps coming for Leinster fans these days, eh?
