Steady Eddie to return to Connacht?
With the news that Eric Elwood is to leave Connacht at the end of the season, speculation is mounting that Eddie O’Sullivan could return to his former stomping ground.
By Declan Whooley
Elwood is expected to announce today that he is stepping down at the end of the season and O’Sullivan is already the leading candidate to take over.
The former Irish coach has been out of Irish rugby since leaving the international post in 2008, but coached the American Eagles in last year's World Cup in New Zealand.
On the face of it he would be a logical successor. He coached Connacht during the 90’s, while also taking charge of Buccaneers and Galwegians so his knowledge of rugby in the province is obvious. He also lives in Ballinasloe which would make it an attractive role for the Cork-man.
O’Sullivan was recently appointed the new Irish Olympic Handball Association High Performance Director – quite the title, but would be keen to get an opportunity to get back into rugby. O’Sullivan held talks with the Super 15 side Western Force last May but it did not lead to any role.
If O’Sullivan does get back into rugby, we can expect the Apres Match boys to get back into character pretty quickly. We missed you Eddie!
