Why did Ireland lose to the All Blacks on Saturday? The players were drunk, according to two dim-witted game show contestants
We’ve heard all sorts of reasons offered for Ireland’s poor showing against the All Blacks on Saturday. This is a new one.
The game between Ireland and New Zealand was tough to watch. But we stuck with it to the bitter end. We don’t know if these two contestants on Channel 4’s Million Pound Drop are rugby fans but we doubt it and we’re pretty sure they didn’t spend Saturday morning eating their cornflakes and watching the action from Hamilton.
Let me introduce you to Si and Clare. After getting all their money past an easy question one, a sport one popped up. The question they were asked was ‘Why were the Ireland rugby team humiliated today?’
The options, as you can see above, were pretty clear. Sadly it wasn’t that clear for Si and Clare.
They eventually put £175,000 on the ‘drunk’ option before putting the rest on the fairly obvious correct answer.

That's right. Each of those wads is £25,000
Is our reputation for boozing that bad that they thought six of players would play a rugby Test drunk? Or, as we suspect, this pair were just a little bit dim. Anyway you can watch the entire show here and if you want to skip to the Irish bit, it starts at 44 minutes.

1. On the day of the show, for the whole day contestants are locked in the green room with no access to TV, radio, the internet etc and therefore having no knowledge of breaking news stories.
2. The options are as you state “Pretty clear” however without seeing the story contestants have to make an educated guess, it is perfectly plausible that members of a sports team could have gone out on a night out the night before and turned up to play a test match with alcohol still in their bloodstream and giving rise to a tabloid story that “Players were still drunk” or similar. I’m sure you would agree that it is not beyond the realms of possibility that A. Grown men could go out and take a night to excess (international sports stars or not) or B. Tabloids could make a story out of nothing. Similar to what you have actually done with your blog post.
3. In light of all of the above when a million pounds is dependant on an answer I can assure you that you tend to be a little more cautious and hedge your bets on an answer that maybe you know to be probably incorrect.
I can also assure you that our answer was not based on any “reputation for boozing” so thanks for insuating that but yet again…cheap shot at writing.
I can also assure you that neither Clare nor Myself are dim, we are both actually very intellectual and have qualifications alongside running a successful business together. Indeed I can guarantee that there are not many people, especially in our age group that are aware of Greek Mythology.
I hope that you take all of the above into account when writing further blog posts and maybe learn all facts before writing your posts insulting a couples intelligence without any facts to base your writing on.
