A corner back who is 50-ish, dodgy quiffs and more tales from Clonmel Commercials’ dressing room

Shedding some light on the characters within the Clonmel Commercials dressing room.

The Tipperary club captured their 16^th senior county title with a narrow victory over Moyle Rovers earlier this month. They now play Limerick's Newcastlewest in the quarter-final of the Munster Senior Club Championship this Sunday. In the lead up that game, we caught up club stalwart Aidan Barry to get some background on the club and the characters that make it what it is.

Club name: Clonmel Commercials Club colours: Green and Gold Year established: 1934 Estimated size of population covered by parish: Who knows, but let’s say 10,000. Proudest moment in the club’s history? Munster Club Final Appearances in 1990 and 1994. We had seven players on the panel of the All Ireland Winning Minor Football team in 2011. Most loyal/fanatical supporters? Eileen Hanrahan and John McNamara Snr.

Best nickname: Danny 'Black Card' Madigan. Prone to get the occasional black card in his old age and despite being quite knowledgeable about the rules, he disputes every one. Most likely player to be found on Tinder? Shane Flynn or Shane Power but their success rate would be very poor. Most likely player to break a beer ban? Ian Fahey would enjoy the occasional social beverage. Dodgiest championship haircut? Michael Quinlivan. The dodgiest quiff in all of Tipp.   Who’s the last guy off the pitch at training? Donal Lynch and his foam roller. The team-mate you’d least like to take a hefty shoulder from? Kevin 'Guns' Fahey hits hard on and off the pitch. The team-mate the opposition would most like to give a hefty shoulder to? Michael Quinlivan all day long. Oldest player to ever have played for the club? Fergal Condon turned 50(ish) on his last birthday and is still playing senior. Played corner back in the recent final.

Player with the longest distance to travel to training? A couple of lads come down from Dublin but usually skip the training and only end up getting a rub and some of Dan’s homemade soup. Last guy you’d want to take a penalty in the last minute of a county final? Ian Barnes. Has missed more penalties than he has hairs on his head

Player you’re most likely to mute in the club WhatsApp group? So many contenders. Shane Taylor is probably the worst with pictures of his miniature body parts. Best ‘Junior B story’ involving your club? Club legend Franny Kelly who is over 50, “apparently” had 5 large bottles of Guinness off the shelf before playing a match against Killenaule earlier this year. He ended up scoring 1-2 the same day and outscored his 19 year old son who was on the same team. One point came from a penalty which he chipped over. His nephew Ian Barnes (mentioned above) usually puts penalties wide so at least one of the family members can manage to get something from a penalty.
