Well-deserved Jonathan…

Great news for Irish rugby as fly-half Jonathan Sexton has been included on a five man shortlist for the IRB Player of the Year.

The in-form number ten has been fantastic for Ireland this year and was a real driving force in Ireland’s 2014 Six Nations triumph as well as impressing during the summer tour to Argentina. To top it all off, he orchestrated Ireland’s fantastic victory over South Africa last weekend with a man of the match performance.

The four other players nominated are South African duo Willie le Roux and Duane Vermeulen, along with New Zealand lock Brodie Retallick and his teammate Julian Savea.

Sexton is the only Northern Hemisphere player nominated for the list and will have his work cut out to claim the top prize against some prestigious talent. An Irish player previously won the gong back in 2001 when Keith Wood was crowned while other previous winners include Dan Carter (twice) and Richie McCaw (three times).

In our thoroughly unbiased eyes, we can only see one winner for this year’s prize…
