The greatest darts player the world has ever seen was beaten on Friday by a young lad from Limerick.
As unlikely sporting upsets go, this one is right up there with Buster Douglas v Mike Tyson or Greece winning Euro 2004.
On Friday, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor was in Newcastle West for an exhibition event with Dennis Priestly and after playing each other and a few local throwers, a youngster called Darragh Shine was plucked from the audience to take on the 16-time world champion over one leg.
Incredibly, even with Taylor taking it easy, Darragh finished on a double to beat the great man.
The Limerick Leader spoke to Darragh’s Da David about the game.
“He was delighted," daid David. "It was unbelievable. In fairness Taylor gave him a great opportunity to win it, he threw a few hands around the middle to let Darragh catch up.
“But Darragh still had to finish on double twelve, and he made it. He only started playing there just before Christmas. Oh my God, it was unbelievable”.
If he only started playing darts at Christmas, we highly recommend he keeps it up. And, after Friday, Darragh has also been tagged with the excellent darts nickname of Darragh ‘Sun’ Shine.
A future star of the PDC is born we suspect.
