8 Gardaí will attend the Euros next month.

They will be accompanied by French Police Liaison Officers and will visit fan zones and stadia and receive briefings from Police Commanders regarding operations. They will also attend de-briefs after games.

Approximately 70,000 Irish fans are expected to travel to France this June and the Gardaí will play a vital role in protecting fans attending the games.

Sergeant Alan Frawley told JOE that An Garda Síochána is currently in consultation with the French authorities and is liaising with other international law enforcement authorities regarding the Euros.

“Gardaí will monitor fan behaviour in the cities, fan zones, on transport and at the stadia and will assist French Police when required in dealing with any potential problems,” he said.

Interestingly, in Maximum Media’s recent Slice of Ireland survey, 44% of Irish fans travelling to the Euros said they were either somewhat or very worried about their safety in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the continent.
