Last night, Dundalk won the Team of the Year Award at the RTE Sports Awards after a fantastic season in which they claimed the Airtricity League title for the second year in a row and won the FAI Cup for good measure.
Despite having a more than legitimate claim to the award, Dundalk’s accolade wasn’t received well in some quarters, with some taking to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction with The Lilywhites’ achievement.

No Dundalk representative should have to defend their claim to the award, but it should be pointed out that the Team of the Year was decided by a public vote.
On the night, more people voted for Dundalk than the other contenders: the Dublin footballers, the Kilkenny hurlers, Ireland’s football, rugby, boxing and hockey teams, the Ireland women’s cricket team, the Cork ladies’ footballers and the Cork camogie team, the Northern Ireland football team and the Irish Special Olympics team.
To all the doubters, Dundalk’s Sean Gannon had the perfect response.
