Although in fairness, it took a hell of time to beat him as reigning World Champion Yohan ‘The Beast’ Blake posted a winning time of 9.75 seconds in Jamaica last night.
Many would have thought that the 100 metres at the London Olympics later this summer was a foregone conclusion, but that theory was blown out of the water at the Jamaican Olympic trials in Kingston last night.
Blake came home in 9.75 seconds, 0.11 seconds faster than Bolt, registering the fastest time in the world this year and a new National Stadium record in the process, beating Bolt’s previous record by one-hundredth of a second.
Blake’s time was also a personal best - his previous best was 9.82 seconds – and not an awful long way away from Bolt’s world record time of 9.58 seconds.
Considering that he is the reigning world champion, Blake’s achievements in Kingston last night shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, but it will provide some vindication for the 22-year old as Bolt was controversially disqualified from the World Championship final in Daegu last year because of a false start.
If the competition provided by Blake isn’t exciting enough, one also has to consider another Jamaican, Asafa Powell, who looked for a long time last night as if he would also beat Bolt and in the end, finished only 0.02 seconds behind him in third place.
Commenting on his victory afterwards, Blake said: "Nine-point-seven-five, it's awesome.
“I won the world championship, so I've got that. Now, I'm the national champion for Jamaica, so I've got that. And now, I go into the Olympics like this."
We’re pretty sure we haven’t heard the last of Bolt yet, but with last night proving that the fastest man in the world is only human, it should make for a brilliant 100 metres event in London later this summer. As for the other countries trying to get the better of Jamaica in the 4x100 metre relay, well... the best of luck.
