Yohan Blake ran a blistering 9.69 seconds in the 100 metres in Lausanne last night to capitalise on Usain Bolt’s absence.
By Declan Whooley
While the double Olympic champion concentrated on the 200 metres, his training partner set a blistering time to take first place in Switzerland.
The time matches American sprinter Tyson Gay’s personal best and Gay himself finished second with a time of 9.83.
Unfortunately for the watching world, Bolt opted to sit out the 100 metres to concentrate on the 200 metres in his first outing since London. He followed up on Blake’s performance to blitz the field in a time of 19.58 seconds.
Not to be outdone on the night by his fellow countryman, Bolt broke his previous meeting record by one hundredth of a second, set at the same venue two years ago.
He finished comfortably ahead of Churandy Martina in second place as the crowd lapped up both the race and post-race celebrations from the speed merchant.
The battle between the two Jamaican sprinters will be fascinating, and judging by Bolt's reaction to Blake's victory last night, the pair still remain on the best of terms.
Will the relationship remain so friendly if Blake gets the upper-hand on his great rival?
