Yes, the fight nobody wanted but everybody expected between David Haye and Dereck Chisora looks set to take place this summer.
Do you remember this?
Of course you do, as it was the latest embarrassing moment in boxing. After going 12 rounds, and losing, to Vitali Klitschko, Dereck Chisora’s post-fight press conference descended into farce after he took exception to David Haye’s taunting, sparking a full scale row in Munich.
Now the two men are set to, surprise surprise, meet in the ring to settle their differences. It is widely reported today that the two British boxers will fight this July, with an announcement expected on Tuesday. Rumours have it that the fight will be at Upton Park, the home of West Ham.
But it is not going to be plain sailing. Following the Munich maul, Chisora had his licence to box taken away by the British Boxing Board of Control. The heavyweight has appealed the ban and we suspect a solution will be found to allow the fight to go ahead.
Haye is also not licenced since he quit after his defeat to Wladimir Klitschko, and he has yet to re-apply but again, we suspect that will be easily resolved.
Promoter Frank Warren, quoted in the Daily Mail, was sure the fight would happen.
“It's a natural fight, it doesn't matter what anyone says,’ he said. “It's a bigger fight than either of them fighting Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko.
“There's lot for them to fight about - in a proper environment. I do see the fight happening. It's the proper forum for them to settle their differences.”
So the hype has already begun. But if you remember both these fighters last bouts, it may not be a classic.
Maybe we need Manny Pacquiao to turn up after Floyd Mayweather’s fight with Miguel Cotto tonight and start shouting the odds to make that fight happen.
