Video: Ortiz breaks jaw and loses in shock upset
If you missed Josesito Lopez versus Victor Ortiz duking it out for the WBC silver welterweight on Sunday morning, you may have missed the fight and upset of the year.
Lopez, a late replacement for Andre Berto who tested positive for a banned substance a month ago, pulled off a shock victory forcing his fellow Mexican-American to retire on his stool after Ortiz failed to reappear for the tenth round.
Ortiz had been expected to face Saul Alvarez for the WBC light-middleweight title after this bout, fell to 29-4-2 and his second successive lost following his loss to Floyd Mayweather in September last year.
After a frenetic back and forth fight that saw Ortiz take the lead on the judges’ scorecards, Lopez appeared to have broken Ortiz’s jaw early in the ninth round, forcing him to retire.
