The former F1 ace, Michael Schumacher, has suffered a cerebral haemorrhage following a skiing accident in France yesterday morning.

The 44-year-old was skiing with his 14-year-old son, Mick, in Meribel, a high-end ski resort in the French Alps, when he fell and hit his head off a rock at around 11.07am yesterday morning. According to doctors, Michael wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for his helmet.

During a press conference this morning, doctors said: “We believe that taking into consideration the very violent shock, his helmet did protect him to a certain extent.

“Someone who would have had this accident without a helmet, he would certainly have not got to here.”

While initial reports suggested that the German had suffered a minor injury and would be okay, his condition deteriorated rapidly in the hospital at Grenoble yesterday evening forcing doctors to perform emergency brain surgery.

The hospital released a statement last night saying: “Mr Schumacher was admitted to the University Hospital of Grenoble at 12:40pm, following a skiing accident which occurred in Meribel in the late morning.

“He suffered a severe head injury with coma on arrival, which required immediate neurosurgical intervention. He remains in a critical situation.”

Doctors have said that they are working “hour-by-hour”, but they have also said that they can’t predict what will happen next.

Michael is still fighting for his life in hospital, so we’ll bring you updates as soon as we have them… Here’s hoping the seven-time F1 world champion makes it through okay.
