No matter where you go abroad, it seems, you’ll always spot somebody in a GAA jersey and that fine tradition was upheld in the US Masters at Augusta of all places yesterday.
Visit Australia, visit South America, visit outer Mongolia for God’s sake and you’re nearly guaranteed to come across some fella in a raggedy old Roscommon or Cavan jersey.
However, one doesn’t necessarily expect to come across an inter-county jersey at perhaps the finest and certainly the snobbiest golf course in the world, where it might be assumed that such a garment would contravene one of Augusta’s ridiculously strict codes.
Not so, it would appear.
Twitter was abuzz last night after numerous Irish viewers tuning into the Masters caught sight of a fella in a Kerry jersey hovering distinctly in the background. It was late enough when he was first spotted, but soon he was turning up everywhere.
Well-known RTE sports hack Des Cahill was amongst the first to spot the Kerryman and soon he was being inundated with various different pictures of the man from the Kingdom, the standout one being snapped alongside Tom Watson as the legendary American strode off the course at the end of his last round of this year’s tournament.

We’re all for proudly displaying your county colours on the international stage, but nevermind Augusta officials, it’s a wonder this fella wasn’t carted away by the fashion police as his get-up was a little ill-advised to say the least.
Oversized Kerry jersey? Oversized white shorts with black socks and black shoes? Then again this is golf, so this guy was probably hailed a trendsetter.
We’re unaware if the lad in question is aware of his new-found fame of if he'll be there again over the weekend. Who knows, he might be cutting a mad dash back to Tralee to catch the Kerry v Mayo game tomorrow afternoon.
Just in case, though, keep an eye out for him once again if you’re tuning into the Masters once again this evening. Let's just hope he's changed the shorts and socks combination this time around.
