As last night again showed, Rory McIlroy is the best golfer in the world right now but those who hope he will be appearing in a green polo shirt in Brazil in 2016 may be disappointed.
In case you missed it, Rory McIlroy won the BMW Championship in Indiana last night, his third win in four starts and his second in six days. He is quite clearly the best golfer in the world at this point and it all bodes well for Europe ahead of the Ryder Cup at the end of the month.
His place on Europe’s team was never in doubt but the decision to include golf in the Olympics from 2016 has led many to wonder which team McIlroy would represent in Rio, as the Holywood man is eligible to play for both Ireland and Great Britain.
In the past the 23-year-old has hinted that he would plump for Team GB and in an interview with today’s Daily Mail, the world number 1 again appears to be leaning towards playing for Britain.
“What makes it such an awful position to be in is I have grown up my whole life playing for Ireland under the Golfing Union of Ireland umbrella,” he said. “But the fact is, I’ve always felt more British than Irish.
“Maybe it was the way I was brought up, I don’t know, but I have always felt more of a connection with the UK than with Ireland. And so I have to weigh that up against the fact that I’ve always played for Ireland and so it is tough. Whatever I do, I know my decision is going to upset some people but I just hope the vast majority will understand.”
Whatever decision Rory makes, we hope everyone gets behind him in four years time.
