Golf legend Seve Ballesteros has died at the age of 54 following a long battle against cancer.
The family of the Spanish great released a statement on his official website on Friday to outline his deteriorating health, and his death was confirmed early on Saturday morning.
Ballesteros was first diagnosed with cancer in 2008, when he underwent a series of operations to remove brain tumours and spent more than two months in hospital.
A hugely popular member of the golfing fraternity, Seve regularly communicated with his former Tour colleagues via video link, while the Champion's Dinner at last month's Masters tournament was themed in honour of Ballesteros by host Phil Mickelson.
A former World Number 1, Seve was a five-time Major winner, including three British Opens in 1979, ’84 and ’88.
More than all that, though, it was the joy and invention he brought to an often staid game which endeared him to the masses – and shots like this were always possible when Seve was in action.
