Young National Hunt jockey dies on holiday

Campbell Gillies, who rode a winner at this year’s Cheltenham Festival, has died at just 21 while on holiday in Corfu.

The racing world has been plunged into sadness today with the news that up-and-coming Scottish jump jockey Campbell Gillies has died on holiday following an accident.

The youngster had ridden over 131 winners in his short career, including 38 in the season just gone. The best win of his career came at Cheltenham this term when he rode Brindisi Breeze to success in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle (pictured above, right).

Gillies, whose brother Finlay plays rugby for the Glasgow Warriors, was a popular figure in the weighroom and his close friend Alexander Foy has already tweeted his sadness at the news.

AP McCoy also tweeted his condolences.
