Following a hugely successful inaugural race last year, the multi-sport adventure race Race2Glory is returning to Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo next weekend.
Comprising of a 10km mountain run and a 23km cycle, followed by a 7km run to the finish, it offers an excellent challenge for the best and most experienced adventure racers out there, while remaining achievable for people of all fitness levels, from the more casual athlete to those determined to push themselves to the limit of their physical capabilities.
One of the key organisers of this year’s race is Padraig Marrey, champion of the renowned adventure race GaelForce West and who was also a huge driving force behind the inaugural event in Kiltimagh 12 months ago.
Commenting on this year’s event, Marrey said: “The Race2Glory course is an ideal training ground for all those who are preparing for Gael Force West 2012. We were delighted with the calibre of athletes that took part in the race last year including some of the country’s top adventure racers who have rated the route as a real challenge and look forward to returning to the race in 2012.”
As well as an individual event, participants will also be able to take part in a team challenge, where a team of four, sponsored by any company, can battle it out over the hills and bog roads of Kiltimagh in an effort to be named as the ‘Fittest company in Ireland’.
There are also loads on other prizes on offer, including return flights to Milan for the athletes that come 53rd and 111th, a goody bag for all participants and the chance to avail of hearty grub, massages and ice baths after the race.
Even though the race is taking place in the middle of July the organisers can’t make any promises about the weather, but they tell me that the long term forecast is for a fine day and there’ll be plenty of craic to be had in the various public houses in Kiltimagh afterwards.
So if you’re up for the challenge, make your way over to the Race2Glory website and Facebook page for more information, including details on how to register and a more in-depth look at the three stages of the race.
Best of luck!
