Chisora facing life ban over Saturday night's unpleasantness

20/02/2012 12:38 pm

Disgraced British boxer Dereck Chisora is facing a life-ban for the ugly brawl with David Haye that transpired following his loss to Vitali Klitschko on Saturday night.

It says a lot about the state of heavyweight boxing at the moment that a fight at a post-match press conference commanded far more attention than what was an excuse for a fight between Chisora and Klitschko, but such was the state of things in Munich on Saturday night.

For those of you who haven’t yet seen what happened, you can do so here, but in short, Chisora got into an ugly brawl with Haye – now retired – and subsequently threatened to shoot and burn the ultra-cocky and highly annoying former world champion.

The incident is currently being investigated by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) after Chisora was released without charge on Sunday after being questioned by Munich police.

A statement from the BBBC general secretary Robert Smith read: "The British Boxing Board of Control are looking at the behaviour of British Boxing Board of Control-licensed Boxer Dereck Chisora prior, during and after his contest for the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship against Vitali Klitschko on Saturday, 18 February 2012 in Munich.

"The stewards will be considering Mr Chisora under regulation 25 [misconduct] and a further statement will be issued once the stewards have decided on what action will be taken.

"With regard to Mr David Haye, Mr Haye is not a licensed boxer with the British Boxing Board of Control and therefore no longer under the jurisdiction of the British Boxing Board of Control."

According to a report in The Guardian today, Smith said that there was a possibility that Chisora could face a lifetime ban from the sport once the authorities have gathered all the necessary information and a hearing has taken place.

"Of course it (a lifetime ban) is (a possibility),” Smith told BBC Radio 5.

“The board have many powers – they can fine, they can suspend and they can withdraw a licence.

"There are many powers to them but let's just get there first before we speculate what we're going to do."

The lifetime ban would, of course, eliminate the possibility of Haye and Chisora going to battle in the ring sometime down the road, which, we suspect, may have been the whole motivation behind the dust-up in the first place.
