All rookie American driver JR Hildebrand had to do to seal a memorable Indy 500 victory was to safely navigate the final corner. Then disaster struck...
Having driven a near perfect race in what is one of the most famous events in motor racing, Hildebrand got it all wrong on the final lap as he went too high while coming up behind Charlie Kimball on the fourth and final turn.
Hildebrand lost control, smashed into the wall and lost a wheel, allowing a pleasantly surprised Englishman Dan Wheldon to nip in and win his second Indy 500, six years after his first triumph in 2005.
As cock-ups go, it’s up there with the best of them and Hildebrand will slot in nicely alongside Jimmy White, Jean Van de Velde and the 1996 Newcastle United team in the pantheon of sporting chokers.
Afterwards, a deflated Hildebrand said: “I caught him in the wrong piece of track. I got up in the marbles and that was it.”
That was it, indeed.
