Serena Williams bowed out of the Aussie Open to youngster Sloane Stephens this week. This picture of her ankle explains why.
For the first time ever in her illustrious career, Serena Williams lost to an American player younger than her at the Australian Open this week.
Nineteen-year-old Sloane Stephens from Florida saw off the multiple Grand Slam winner 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. It was clear watching it that injury began to affect Williams during the second set and that allowed Stephens to come back into the match.
We knew it was her ankle, and to a lesser extent her back, that was hampering Williams but via this tweet we can now see just how badly injured Williams’ ankle was.

As she says herself, ‘ouch’ pretty much sums it up.
